Words They Say
a poem
She walks a sunlit path with her basket at her hip,
a long distance from her cottage to the village.
Two boys pass by. They turn and follow her.
Dried leaves cover the ground.
She thinks that over time, something has changed.
a long distance from her cottage to the village.
Two boys pass by. They turn and follow her.
Dried leaves cover the ground.
She thinks that over time, something has changed.
“The witch used to be ugly.”
They sneer. “Her beauty now is false.”
Her skirt wraps around her ankles like chains confining
and her feet are weighed down.
“Her husband loves every woman except her.”
They sneer. “Her beauty now is false.”
Her skirt wraps around her ankles like chains confining
and her feet are weighed down.
“Her husband loves every woman except her.”
She walks a sunlit path with her basket at her hip,
a long distance from the village to the beach.
They throw things at her.
Sticks adorn her hair and stones lick her skin.
She knows that over time, nothing has changed.
a long distance from the village to the beach.
They throw things at her.
Sticks adorn her hair and stones lick her skin.
She knows that over time, nothing has changed.
“The witch is stupid.”
They laugh as she stumbles.
Her basket is burdened with sand
and her arms are weighed down.
“Her own son loathes her presence.”
They laugh as she stumbles.
Her basket is burdened with sand
and her arms are weighed down.
“Her own son loathes her presence.”
She walks a sunlit path with her basket at her hip,
a short distance from the sand into the ocean.
They stand on the shore.
Small waves glisten in the sun.
She knows that over time, nothing will change.
a short distance from the sand into the ocean.
They stand on the shore.
Small waves glisten in the sun.
She knows that over time, nothing will change.
“The witch is evil.”
They watch as she sinks.
Her refuse-filled hair floats freely in the waves
and her heart is weighed down.
“No one would miss her.”
They watch as she sinks.
Her refuse-filled hair floats freely in the waves
and her heart is weighed down.
“No one would miss her.”
Their words had torn her spirit.
